The short answer: the best way to spend 10 days in Morocco is slowly, on a one-way route. Land in Marrakech and head straight to Essaouira for two nights by the sea, come back for two nights in Marrakech, cross the Atlas to a night in the Sahara, then give Fes two nights and end with a night in Chefchaouen. The route finishes in Tangier, then the Al Boraq train to Casablanca for your flight home. Every key city gets two nights, and no day has more than one long drive.

How we put this together. This route is assembled from published schedules, not retold from one trip. Bus and drive times come from Rome2rio, Supratours timetables reported by a local guide, and a tour operator's Marrakech-to-Fes itinerary, checked between September and October 2026; tour details were read on GetYourGuide between October 14 and 16, 2026.

Key takeaways

  • 10 days in Morocco is enough for Essaouira, Marrakech, a night in the Sahara, Fes and Chefchaouen with two nights in each main city.
  • A 10-day Morocco itinerary has only three long road days, all on the desert crossing from Marrakech to Fes: about 6, 4 and 8 hours of driving.
  • Starting a 10-day trip in Essaouira, about 3 hours from Marrakech by Supratours bus, gives two quiet days by the sea to get over jet lag.
  • Chefchaouen has no train station; from there, Tangier is about 1 hour 45 minutes by road, which makes it the practical place to end the route before the Al Boraq train to Casablanca.

Is 10 days in Morocco enough?

For a first trip, it is the length we would choose. Ten days covers the classic Marrakech–Sahara–Fes route and adds the two places shorter trips sacrifice: the Atlantic coast and the blue town. Most of all, it adds slack: you sleep twice in the same bed in Essaouira, Marrakech and Fes.

What 10 days still leaves out: a walking day in the High Atlas and Rabat, which need twelve days, and the Roman ruins of Volubilis, which need more.

Trip length Route shape Nights per city Feels like
8 days One way, Casablanca → Marrakech Mostly one A tour of the whole country, fast
10 days One way, Marrakech → Tangier, with the coast Two in each main city A trip with room to breathe
12 days or more Three regions plus an Atlas walk Two, sometimes three Unhurried, with time to walk

Can't book a multi-city flight? You can run 10 days as a round trip from Marrakech with two tours, a desert loop and then a northern loop (the northern half is covered in the variants further down). For the desert half, a 4-day small-group tour from Marrakech to Merzouga and back, capped at 18 people, sleeps in a kasbah in the Dades and a Merzouga camp. It showed 4.8 out of 5 from 125 reviews, from $190 per person, as of October 15, 2026.

Days 1–2: Essaouira first

Starting by the sea is the point of this route. After an overnight flight, two easy days in a walled port with Atlantic wind beat a first afternoon in the Marrakech souks. Arrange a private transfer from Marrakech airport straight to Essaouira, about 2.5 hours by road.

Spend day two on foot: the fishing port in the morning, the ramparts, the medina's lanes, a long lunch. In summer this matters even more: Essaouira averages a July high of about 71°F, against about 100°F in Marrakech.

Getting to the next stage: Supratours runs seven buses a day from Marrakech to Essaouira, about 3 hours with a short break; check the return times with Supratours before you book, as third-party timetables disagree. Yes, you drive this road twice; it is the one backtrack on the route, and it is flat and short.

Days 3–4: Marrakech, two nights

Arrive on day three in time for Jemaa el-Fnaa as the food stalls set up. Day four is your full day: the souks before the lanes fill up, Bahia Palace late morning, a rest at your riad through the heat, and Jardin Majorelle in the late afternoon. Majorelle tickets are sold online only, for a timed slot.

Where to sleep: a riad in the medina for both nights, ideally on a quiet lane rather than right beside Jemaa el-Fnaa, so you can rest before the desert.

Days 5–7: across the Sahara to Fes

This is the only fast stretch of the trip. A 3-day desert tour from Marrakech that ends in Fes, rather than looping back, covers it: about 6 hours of driving on day five to the Dades Valley, about 4 hours on day six to Merzouga and a camel ride into the dunes, and about 8 hours from Merzouga to Fes on day seven. Nights are in a Dades guesthouse and a desert camp, typically with dinner and breakfast.

Check the end point before you book: many 3-day tours return to Marrakech, which would break this route. One small-group tour runs exactly this way, with Aït Benhaddou, the Todra Gorge and a night in an Erg Chebbi camp; its first night is near Kelâat M'Gouna or Tinghir, and it reaches Fes around 7 p.m. It is capped at 18 travelers and showed 4.8 out of 5 from 229 reviews, from $136 per person, as of October 16, 2026.

Day seven is the hardest of the ten. You leave the dunes at sunrise and reach Fes in the evening. Ask your Fes riad to meet you where the car stops, and plan nothing beyond dinner.

Days 8–10: Fes and Chefchaouen

Day 8: Fes. After two days of open landscapes, Fes el-Bali is the opposite: a car-free maze. A licensed local guide for the morning shows you the madrasas and the tanneries in hours rather than days. Keep the afternoon free; this is the reason you have two nights here.

Day 9: Fes to Chefchaouen. About 3.5 hours by road, or 4 hours 40 minutes on the CTM bus; Chefchaouen has no train station. Arrive in time for the late-afternoon light on the blue lanes. A day trip from Fes is possible, but on this route, stay the night: the town is quietest in the early morning.

Day 10: Chefchaouen to Tangier, then Casablanca. About 1 hour 45 minutes by road to Tangier, or 2.5 hours by bus. There is no direct flight from Tangier to the United States: Royal Air Maroc's nonstop flights leave from Casablanca. So the route ends in Tangier, then the Al Boraq high-speed train to Casablanca for your flight home. Check the train times on oncf-voyages.ma against your flight before you buy either; if they don't leave a comfortable margin, add a night in Casablanca.

Four ways to adapt this route

If you cannot book a multi-city flight

Run the trip as a round trip from Marrakech with two tours: the desert loop described above, then a northern loop. You lose Essaouira and cross the Atlas twice, but someone else handles every transfer, and you fly home from the airport you landed at.

The northern half comes as a 4-day private tour from Marrakech: Casablanca and the Hassan II Mosque, two nights in Fes, one in Chefchaouen, then Rabat on the way back. It includes three breakfasts, three dinners and local guides in Fes and Chefchaouen; lunches and entrance fees are extra. It showed 4.7 out of 5 from 40 reviews, from $652 per person, as of October 15, 2026.

Exit from Fes instead of Tangier

Skip the Chefchaouen night and fly home from Fes after day nine, on a connecting flight, or visit Chefchaouen on a long day trip from Fes. You save a hotel change but lose the town's quiet morning.

Swap the coast for the mountains

Replace Essaouira with two nights in the High Atlas foothills. You trade the sea for walking; in summer, the coast is the cooler choice.

Travel in Ramadan

Every stage still works, but some cafés and restaurants close during the day. Ramadan 2027 is expected around February 8 to March 8, depending on the moon sighting.

FAQ

Is 10 days in Morocco enough?

Yes, for a first trip covering Essaouira, Marrakech, the Sahara, Fes and Chefchaouen at a comfortable pace. Not enough to add an Atlas trek or Rabat without rushing.

What is the best 10-day Morocco itinerary?

A one-way route from Marrakech to Tangier: Essaouira, Marrakech, the Sahara, Fes and Chefchaouen, with two nights in each main city.

Should I start in Marrakech or Essaouira?

Fly into Marrakech and go straight to Essaouira. Two calm days by the sea are the easiest way to start after a long flight.

Can I do 10 days in Morocco without a car?

Yes. Buses cover Essaouira and Chefchaouen, a tour covers the desert, and the medinas are best on foot.

Is it better to do 10 days as a round trip from Marrakech?

Only if you cannot book a multi-city flight. A round trip with two tours from Marrakech works, but you lose Essaouira and cross the Atlas twice.
