The short answer: 5 days in Morocco works best as a loop from Marrakech: you fly into and out of Marrakech, and in between there is no rental car and no domestic flight. Spend two days in the medina, then take a 3-day tour to the Sahara dunes at Merzouga and back. Five days here means five nights on the ground, with your flight home on day six. If long road days put you off, swap the desert for Essaouira and a day in the Atlas Mountains.

How we put this together. This plan is built from published schedules, not from one trip of ours. Drive times come from a tour operator's day-by-day itinerary (read October 16, 2026) and from Rome2rio; tour prices and inclusions were read on GetYourGuide on October 15 and 16, 2026.

Key takeaways

  • 5 days in Morocco is enough for Marrakech and one night in the Sahara dunes at Merzouga, on a 3-day tour that starts and ends in Marrakech.
  • A 3-day Sahara tour from Marrakech spends about 6 hours on the road on day one, 4 on day two and 9 on the way back, arriving in Marrakech around 8 p.m.
  • A 5-day Morocco itinerary should not include Fes: reaching it from the desert and returning to Marrakech would add a full day of travel.
  • Without the desert, 5 days in Morocco fits Marrakech, a day in the High Atlas from Imlil and a night in Essaouira, all reachable by bus or day trip.

Is 5 days in Morocco enough?

For Marrakech and the dunes, yes. For anything more, no: five days means one region plus the road to the desert.

The constraint is distance. The big dunes of Erg Chebbi sit on the far side of the High Atlas, and a published 3-day tour schedule puts the drive at about 6 hours, then 4, then 9 on the way back. Shorter 2-day tours head to the Zagora area instead, not to Erg Chebbi. With five days, the 3-day tour fits and leaves you two days for Marrakech.

GetYourGuide's bestselling 3-day Marrakech–Merzouga tour showed 4.9 out of 5 from 23,718 reviews, from $129 per person, as of October 15, 2026, with a private option and free cancellation.

Day 5 ends late. The tour schedule we used puts arrival in Marrakech around 8 p.m. Book your flight home for the next day, and a fifth night in Marrakech.

Days 1–2: Marrakech

Land, reach your riad and keep day one light. The medina takes a few hours to make sense; end the day on Jemaa el-Fnaa as the food stalls set up.

Day two is your only full day in the city, so shape it around the heat:

  • Morning: the souks, before the lanes fill up.
  • Late morning: Bahia Palace, about 15 minutes' walk from Jemaa el-Fnaa, for the courtyards and some shade.
  • Midday: back to the riad for lunch and a rest.
  • Late afternoon: Jardin Majorelle, a short taxi ride away. Tickets are sold online only, for a timed slot, so book yours before you fly.

Where to sleep: a riad inside the medina for all three Marrakech nights, the two before the tour and the one after. Ask whether they will keep your main bag while you are in the desert, so you travel with a small overnight bag.

Getting to the next stage: the tour picks you up at your riad or the nearest gate early on day three; the schedule we used gives 7:15 a.m.

Days 3–5: the Sahara loop

Day 3: Marrakech to the Dades Valley, about 6 hours of driving. Over the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass, a guided visit of Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987, then on through Ouarzazate. Night in a hotel or guesthouse in the Dades Valley.

Day 4: Dades to Merzouga, about 4 hours. The Todra Gorge in the morning, then east to Merzouga and a camel ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset. Night in a desert camp.

Day 5: Merzouga to Marrakech, about 9 hours. Sunrise over the dunes, then the full road back over the Atlas. Lunch is not included on the schedule we read: carry some dirhams.

Shared or private?

Shared is cheaper and runs on fixed times. Private lets you stop when you want, which matters on a 9-hour day. If you can give the desert four of your five days, a private 4-day tour spreads the same road over one more day, at the cost of your full day in Marrakech.

One option, a private 4-day Sahara tour from Marrakech, includes a private English-speaking guide, an air-conditioned vehicle, all breakfasts and dinners, accommodation and the camel ride; lunches and monument entrances are extra. It showed 4.9 out of 5 from 65 reviews, from $550 per person, as of October 15, 2026. Check the day-by-day plan and where it drops you at the end before you book.

See the private 4-day Sahara tour →

Whichever tour you pick, compare three things before you pay: group size, the type of camp, and where the last day drops you.

Desert nights get cold. Even after a warm day, the dunes cool fast once the sun goes down, and from November through March snow can fall on the Tizi n'Tichka pass. Pack a warm layer.

The version without the desert: Atlas and Essaouira

Skip the Sahara if three days in a van sound worse than missing the dunes. This version keeps every leg under about 3 hours.

Day 1: arrive in Marrakech. Day 2: the medina, as above.

Day 3: the High Atlas. Imlil sits about 75 minutes by road from Marrakech, below Jebel Toubkal. Go with a driver or a small-group day trip, walk for a few hours to a village, and be back in Marrakech for dinner.

Browse day trips from Marrakech →

Day 4: to Essaouira. Supratours runs seven departures a day from Marrakech, the first at 7:45 a.m., about 3 hours with a short break, and drops you next to the medina. Afternoon on the ramparts and the port.

Day 5: Essaouira, then back. A slow morning by the sea, then a Supratours bus back to Marrakech, about 3 hours, for a flight the next day. Check the Essaouira–Marrakech timetable on supratours.ma and book your seat for a time that leaves a margin before your flight.

In summer, this is the better version. In July, Essaouira's average high is about 71°F against about 100°F in Marrakech.

FAQ

Is 5 days in Morocco enough?

Yes for Marrakech plus either the Sahara or Essaouira and the Atlas. Not enough to add Fes or Chefchaouen without spending most of the trip in transit.

What can you see in Morocco in 5 days?

The Marrakech medina, the High Atlas, Aït Benhaddou, the Todra Gorge and a night in the Erg Chebbi dunes, all on one loop from Marrakech.

Can you do 5 days in Morocco without a car?

Yes. A 3-day tour handles the desert, and the no-desert version uses a day trip and the Supratours bus.

Should I add Fes to a 5-day Morocco trip?

No. Getting from the desert to Fes and then back to Marrakech for your flight adds a full day of travel. Save Fes for a trip of a week or more.

Can I see the Sahara in a day trip from Marrakech?

Not the big dunes. Merzouga is too far, which is why the shortest Merzouga tours from Marrakech last three days.
