The short answer: this Morocco 8 day itinerary for a first trip runs one way, from Casablanca to Marrakech, so no road is driven twice. Land in Casablanca, sleep in Chefchaouen, give Fes two nights, cross the Middle Atlas to a camp in the Merzouga dunes, then come back over the High Atlas through the Dades Valley and Aït Benhaddou to Marrakech. You see the north, the desert and the south without backtracking, at the cost of a new bed most nights.

How we put this together. The route below follows the day-by-day plan of a private 8-day tour as listed on GetYourGuide on October 16, 2026; drive and train times come from Rome2rio, checked the same day. We have not taken that tour; the long road days are flagged where they fall.

Key takeaways

  • An 8-day Morocco itinerary from Casablanca to Marrakech covers Rabat, Chefchaouen, Fes, the Merzouga dunes, the Dades Valley and Aït Benhaddou without driving any road twice.
  • The longest day on this route is Fes to Merzouga, about 7 hours of driving on Rome2rio before any stops.
  • Royal Air Maroc flies nonstop to Casablanca from New York-JFK, Washington Dulles and Miami, which makes Casablanca the natural entry point for an 8-day route ending in Marrakech.
  • An 8-day route through Morocco leaves out the Atlantic coast, a walking day in the High Atlas and any slow day outside Fes and Marrakech.

Is 8 days in Morocco enough?

Enough to see the classic circuit once; not enough to linger. You get two imperial cities, the blue town, the desert and the kasbah country, but you sleep in five different places in seven nights.

The private tour this route follows starts at Casablanca airport and ends with a transfer to Marrakech airport. It includes seven nights, daily breakfast plus two dinners, a desert camp night with dinner and breakfast, a camel ride, visits of Fes and Marrakech, and a local guide at Aït Benhaddou. Other meals, drinks, tips and museum entrances are extra. It was listed from $1,239 per person as of October 16, 2026, with free cancellation, but it had only six reviews on October 14, 2026: read them, and the inclusions, before you book.

Days 1–3: Casablanca, Chefchaouen and Fes

Day 1: the longest arrival day. From Casablanca, Rabat is about an hour by road, and Rabat to Chefchaouen another 3 hours 45 minutes. After a transatlantic flight, that is a lot. The tour this route is based on lists the Hassan II Mosque on day one only if time allows.

Want the mosque for sure? Arrive a day early. A night in Casablanca turns the trip into 9 days but gives you the Hassan II Mosque and a rested start. A small-group city tour with the mosque entry ticket included showed 4.7 out of 5 from 1,541 reviews, from $40 per person, as of October 16, 2026.

Day 2: Chefchaouen to Fes. Walk the blue lanes before the day-trippers arrive, then drive about 3.5 hours to Fes.

Day 3: Fes. The one full day in a city before Marrakech. Fes el-Bali is a car-free maze: a licensed local guide for the morning saves hours of getting lost. Keep the afternoon free.

Where to sleep: a riad in Chefchaouen's medina, and one inside Fes el-Bali for two nights. Ask each riad to meet you where cars stop.

Days 4–6: the Sahara and the south

Day 4: Fes to Merzouga. About 7 hours of driving before stops, through the cedar country around Ifrane, a lunch stop in Midelt and the Ziz Valley. You switch to a camel at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes for the ride to camp; the listing gives no arrival time, so ask your operator.

Day 5: Merzouga to the Dades Valley. About 3 hours to Tinghir, then the Todra Gorge on foot and on to the Dades. A shorter day after the longest one.

Day 6: Dades to Marrakech. About 5.5 hours of driving on the direct road, more with the stops at Ouarzazate and Aït Benhaddou. From November through March, snow can fall on the Tizi n'Tichka pass; leave the evening free in case of delays.

Days 4 to 6 are three road days in a row. This is where 8 days shows its limits. If anyone in your group struggles with long drives, choose a private tour, so you decide when to stop.

Days 7–8: Marrakech

Day 7 is the only day on this route with no transfer. Spend the morning in the souks, rest at your riad through the midday heat, and keep the late afternoon for the gardens. Day 8 is the transfer to the airport.

Where to sleep: a riad in the medina, or a hotel just outside it if you want taxis at the door.

With a tour or on your own

You can build this route yourself with trains and a desert tour, but not with exactly the same stops: the railway does not reach Chefchaouen or the south.

With a private tour On your own
Getting to Fes Driven, via Rabat and Chefchaouen Direct train Casablanca → Fes, about 3 h 50 min
Chefchaouen A night on day one A day trip or bus from Fes, about 3.5 h each way by road
The desert Included, one way to Marrakech A 3-day tour from Fes ending in Marrakech, sold by several operators
Airport transfers Included at both ends Yours to arrange
Best for Short on time, no planning Travelers who like trains and a looser plan

On your own, a workable order is: land in Casablanca and take the train to Fes; spend days 2 and 3 in Fes, one of them in Chefchaouen; take a desert tour from Fes on days 4 to 6 that ends in Marrakech; then a free day in Marrakech. Casablanca airport has its own train station, with a possible change at Casa-Voyageurs. For the Chefchaouen day, the CTM bus from Fes takes about 4 hours 40 minutes each way, so a driver or a day tour is the easier choice.

For days 4 to 6, look for a tour that starts in Fes and finishes in Marrakech. One small-group option does: Fes to a Merzouga camp, the Dades Valley, then Aït Benhaddou and the High Atlas, reaching Marrakech around 6 p.m. It showed 4.7 out of 5 from 901 reviews, from $109 per person, as of October 16, 2026, with hotel pickup in Fes.

What to cut from an 8-day Morocco itinerary

An 8-day Morocco itinerary runs at a pace. Here is what it leaves out, and what to drop first if you have less time.

What 8 days does not include:

  • The Atlantic coast. No Essaouira, no beach day.
  • A walking day in the High Atlas. You cross the mountains twice by road and never walk in them.
  • Volubilis and Meknes. The 8-day tour plan this route is based on does not list them; some 6-day versions do.
  • A second night anywhere except Fes and Marrakech.

If you are even shorter on time, cut in this order:

  1. Rabat. It is a stop on the way; skipping it buys you an earlier arrival in Chefchaouen.
  2. Chefchaouen. Without it, a shorter route can start in Fes, by train from Casablanca.
  3. The free day in Marrakech. It is the only rest day on the route: cut it last.

The 6-day private version runs the same direction with nights in Chefchaouen, Fes, a Merzouga camp and the Dades gorges, adding Volubilis and Meknes on day two. It showed 4.6 out of 5 from 57 reviews, from $968 per person, as of October 15, 2026, with pickup at your Casablanca hotel rather than the airport.

FAQ

Is 8 days in Morocco enough?

Yes, to see the north, the Sahara and Marrakech once, at a steady pace. Not enough to add the coast or slow days.

Should an 8-day Morocco itinerary start in Casablanca or Marrakech?

Casablanca, if you fly Royal Air Maroc nonstop from the US: the route then runs north first and ends in Marrakech, with no backtracking.

What is the longest drive on an 8-day route?

Fes to Merzouga, about 7 hours of driving before stops, followed two days later by the Dades to Marrakech leg, about 5.5 hours.

Can I do this Morocco 8 day itinerary without a tour?

Partly. Trains cover Casablanca to Fes, and a bus or day trip reaches Chefchaouen. For the desert, you still need a tour or a car.

Do I see the Hassan II Mosque on this route?

Not for certain. The 8-day tour plan used here lists it on day one only if time allows. Arrive a day early for a guaranteed visit.
