The short answer: the right Morocco itinerary depends on how many days you have, because each trip length fits one route shape. With 5 days, loop from Marrakech to the Sahara and back. With 7, travel one way from Marrakech to Fes through the desert. With 8, cross the country one way from Casablanca to Marrakech. With 10 or 12, slow down and add Chefchaouen, the coast and, at 12, a day on foot in the Atlas.
How we put this together. This guide compares routes; it is not the diary of one trip. Drive and train times come from Rome2rio, rail network tables and tour operators' published itineraries, checked in September and October 2026; tour routes and prices were read on GetYourGuide on October 15 and 16, 2026. Every route follows two rules: one big move a day wherever the map allows (the 8-day route's first day, Casablanca to Chefchaouen via Rabat, is the one exception) and, from 7 days, never the same mountain road twice.
Key takeaways
- For a first trip to Morocco, 7 days is the minimum to see Marrakech, a night in the Sahara and Fes; at 10 days, the same trip stops feeling rushed.
- The Sahara dunes at Merzouga take roughly 10 hours of driving from Marrakech, split across two days on most tours, so a Morocco itinerary shorter than 5 days cannot reasonably include them.
- A one-way Morocco itinerary, flying into one city and home from another, avoids crossing the High Atlas twice.
- Royal Air Maroc flies nonstop to Casablanca from New York-JFK, Washington Dulles and Miami, which makes Casablanca a natural start for a route ending in Marrakech.
How many days in Morocco?
The desert sets the floor. The big dunes of Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga, sit on the far side of the High Atlas: 3-day tours from Marrakech spend about 6–7 hours on the road on day one and 4–5 hours on day two to reach them. Shorter 2-day tours head to the Zagora area instead, not to Erg Chebbi.
So: under 5 days, stay in Marrakech and use day trips. At 5, fit the Sahara as a loop. From 7, add a second imperial city. From 10, stop sleeping in a new bed every night.
On a short trip, the desert tour is the booking that holds the plan together. GetYourGuide's bestselling 3-day Marrakech–Merzouga tour showed 4.9 out of 5 from 23,718 reviews, from $129 per person, as of October 15, 2026.

5 days: a loop from Marrakech
Fly in and out of Marrakech, spend two nights in the medina, then take a 3-day tour that brings you back. Fes is out of reach: do not try to add it.
Skip the desert if long hours in a van sound worse than missing the dunes. Swap it for Essaouira, about 3 hours away on the Supratours bus.
7 days: Marrakech to Fes through the Sahara
The classic first-trip shape: two days in Marrakech, three crossing the Atlas to a desert camp, two in Fes. Running it one way means your desert tour drops you in Fes instead of driving you back. The price is one hard day: Merzouga to Fes takes about 8 hours on operators' published itineraries.
8 days: one way from Casablanca to Marrakech
Start north, end south: Rabat, a night in Chefchaouen, two nights in Fes, then down to Merzouga, the Todra and Dades gorges, Aït Benhaddou and the Tizi n'Tichka pass into Marrakech. It is the most complete route for its length, and the shape many private circuits sell.
The trade-off is rhythm: outside Fes and Marrakech, you change beds every night. Keep it to see the north, the desert and the south once; move to 10 days to enjoy it.
Only six days? A private tour compresses this route, adding Volubilis and Meknes, with nights in Chefchaouen, Fes, a Merzouga camp and the Dades gorges. It showed 4.6 out of 5 from 57 reviews, from $968 per person, as of October 15, 2026. Pickup is at your Casablanca hotel, not the airport.

10 days: the slow version, with the coast
Take the 7-day spine and give it air. Add Essaouira at the start, about 2.5 hours' drive from Marrakech, and Chefchaouen at the end, about 3.5 hours by road from Fes or 4 hours 40 minutes on the CTM bus. Fly home from Casablanca. Tangier is the natural place to finish after Chefchaouen, but it has no direct flight to the United States: the Al Boraq high-speed train links it to Rabat and Casablanca for your flight home.
This is the length we would choose for a first trip: Marrakech and Fes each get two nights, and the three long road days are bunched on the desert crossing, with slow days on either side.
12 days: three regions, nothing cut
Twelve days adds what every shorter route drops: a walking day in the High Atlas from Imlil, about 75 minutes by road from Marrakech, and Rabat on the way to a Casablanca flight home. You keep the south, Fes, Chefchaouen and Essaouira, with a free half day every three days or so.
And two weeks?
Two weeks follows the 12-day shape with spare nights in Chefchaouen, Fes or on the coast. You gain pace, not places.
Where to start and end your Morocco trip
Your airports shape the route more than your wish list does. Search a multi-city ticket, not a round trip.
| Airport | Why start or end here | Fits |
|---|---|---|
| Marrakech | About 9.3 million passengers in 2024, far more flights than Fes | The 5-, 7-, 10- and 12-day routes |
| Casablanca | Royal Air Maroc nonstops from JFK, Dulles and Miami; Marrakech is about 2 hours 40 minutes away by train | Starting the 8-day route, ending the 10 and 12 |
| Fes | A smaller airport (about 1.9 million passengers in 2024): check your connection | Ending the 7-day route |
| Tangier | Linked to Casablanca by the Al Boraq high-speed train; no direct US flight | Ending in the north, or arriving from Spain |
Trains link Marrakech, Casablanca, Fes and Tangier; Chefchaouen and the desert are reached by road, by bus or on a tour.
Landing in Casablanca and want a driver waiting at arrivals? An 8-day private tour covers the full one-way route with airport pickup and drop-off, from $1,239 per person as of October 16, 2026. It had only six reviews on October 14, 2026, so read them and the inclusions before you book.

Which Morocco itinerary suits you
The length gives you the route; your travel style adjusts it.
First trip
Seven days if that is all you have, ten if you can. Take a tour for the Sahara: the driver handles the mountain roads and the camp. On a 7-day route, pick one that drops you in Fes rather than looping back to Marrakech.
With kids
Cut the hours, not the country. A base in Marrakech with day trips keeps road time short; if the desert matters, go private so you choose when to stop. We would not put young children on a group tour with two long road days back to back.
Without a car
Every route above works without one. Trains link the imperial cities, buses reach Chefchaouen and Essaouira, and a tour covers the desert. A rental car pays off only for the Atlas and small villages at your own pace.
Without the desert
Fly into Marrakech, take the direct train to Fes (about 7 hours on published network tables), continue to Chefchaouen by bus, then Tangier and the Al Boraq train to Casablanca for your flight home. Or keep it simple: Marrakech and Essaouira.
As a couple, or to slow down
Fewer stops, two nights each, and a riad you look forward to coming back to. Make a medina riad in Marrakech your anchor, and cut any stop that costs more road time than it gives back.

When to go, and how the season changes the route
Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) suit every route above.
- Summer: Marrakech and the Sahara get very hot. Shift time to the coast and keep desert activity to early mornings and evenings.
- Winter and December: short days and cold desert nights. Choose a camp with heating or extra blankets, and allow for winter weather on the High Atlas passes.
- Ramadan: every route still works, but some cafés and restaurants close during the day. Ramadan 2027 is expected around February 8 to March 8, depending on the moon sighting.
Plan a free half day every three days. On any route of 8 days or more, it is the difference between seeing Morocco and passing through it.
What to book before you go
Book in this order; the rest can wait until you land.
Before you fly, most urgent first
0 / 6 doneRemote roads and desert camps are where medical cover matters most: before you buy a policy, check that it covers emergency medical care and evacuation for every day of the trip.
FAQ
How many days do you need in Morocco?
Seven days for Marrakech, the Sahara and Fes; ten for Chefchaouen or the coast without rushing. Under five days, skip the desert and base yourself in Marrakech.
What is the best Morocco itinerary for a first trip?
One way from Marrakech to Fes through the Sahara, stretched to ten days with Essaouira and Chefchaouen if you can.
Should I fly into Marrakech or Casablanca?
Marrakech if your route starts in the south; Casablanca for Royal Air Maroc's US nonstops or a route heading north first. From 7 days, fly home from another city.
Can you do a Morocco itinerary without a car?
Yes. Trains connect Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat, Fes and Tangier, buses reach Chefchaouen and Essaouira, and a multi-day tour handles the Sahara.
Can I see the Sahara on a short trip to Morocco?
From five days, yes: a 3-day tour from Marrakech reaches the Merzouga dunes and brings you back. A day trip cannot reach them. Day trips go to the Agafay, a stone desert about 40 to 50 minutes from Marrakech with no sand dunes: a pleasant evening, not a substitute.
