The short answer: for a stay of several months in Morocco, there are three kinds of health cover, each built for a different situation. A local Moroccan plan is designed for people who live in Morocco and get care there. An international health plan is designed for people based abroad who want routine care as well as emergencies. A travel medical plan, extendable up to 364 days, covers emergencies for people whose home is still somewhere else. One rule sorts many readers before price does: SafetyWing's Nomad Insurance Complete cannot be bought with the United States as your country of residence, so a US resident's SafetyWing option is Nomad Insurance Essential.

How we put this together, and what we are not. On October 30, 2026, we read SafetyWing's product pages and help center, the CDC Yellow Book chapter on travel insurance, Medicare.gov and UK government health advice for Morocco. On November 2, 2026, we added product pages from AXA Assurance Maroc, IMG and Cigna Global, named for comparison only; SafetyWing is the insurer we link to. We are not insurance brokers or agents, we have not bought or claimed on these plans, and nothing here is personal advice.

Key takeaways

  • Health insurance for a long stay in Morocco usually comes from one of three sources: a Moroccan insurer, an international health insurer, or a travel medical plan extendable up to 364 days.
  • SafetyWing's Nomad Insurance Complete cannot be bought with the United States as the country of residence, according to SafetyWing's help center in September 2026; a US citizen who actually lives abroad may be eligible if the US is not their country of residence.
  • US residents can buy SafetyWing's Nomad Insurance Essential, a travel medical plan that runs from 5 to 364 days and excludes pre-existing conditions and routine care.
  • Medicare usually does not cover health care outside the United States, according to Medicare.gov and the CDC Yellow Book.
  • Travel medical plans pay for new emergencies; international health plans add routine visits and, in some cases, maternity care, on a yearly contract.

Who this guide is for, and the residence question first

Remote workers, digital nomads, active retirees and anyone spending two months or more in Morocco face a question a two-week visitor does not: which country counts as home. Insurers ask it first, and the answer decides which plans you can buy.

SafetyWing makes the point concrete. Its Nomad Insurance Complete defines your country of residence as where you spend the most time, by default more than 183 days a year, and the United States and US territories cannot be selected (help center, September 26, 2026). Its Nomad Insurance Essential is open to US residents, but only while traveling outside their home country.

Examples come from product pages, not full policies: ask for the complete wording before you pay.

Local Moroccan health insurance

Moroccan insurers sell health policies, including individual ones, priced in dirhams and built around care in Moroccan clinics, under the supervision of ACAPS, the national insurance regulator. Morocco also has a compulsory public scheme, AMO; whether a foreign resident can join depends on personal status. According to ACAPS, complementary health insurance tops up AMO and can be taken out individually; the contract sets whether the insurer pays the clinic directly or reimburses you, and ACAPS can examine a complaint once you have first raised it with the insurer.

One example, read November 2, 2026: AXA Assurance Maroc, which appears on ACAPS's list of supervised insurers, sells an individual plan called SPI individuel that covers care in Morocco and abroad, in three formulas. Standard covers Morocco and six European countries, with an annual reimbursement cap of 5,000,000 dirhams per person; Essentielle covers the world except the US, Canada, the UK, Switzerland, Japan, Luxembourg and Hong Kong, with 10,000,000 dirhams; Premium covers the whole world, with 15,000,000 dirhams. The same page limits emergency cover abroad to business or tourist trips of 45 days at most. The page gives no price, no eligibility rules for foreign residents and no evacuation benefit, so those are the first questions to ask AXA.

With any local contract, confirm where it pays, whether it includes evacuation abroad, whether it requires proof of residence, and the language of the policy and claim forms; get the answers in writing.

Who it fits poorly: anyone who expects to fly home for treatment, or who moves between countries during the year.

International health insurance for expats and nomads

Health insurance for Morocco expats usually means this: a yearly plan covering routine visits as well as emergencies. The CDC Yellow Book notes that expatriates and people planning more than a year abroad may have options beyond travel insurance.

SafetyWing's Nomad Insurance Complete is one plan in this category. Here is what its own pages state, read October 30, 2026:

  • Limits: $1,500,000 a year for medical treatment and hospitalization.
  • Beyond emergencies: routine checkups and vaccines up to $350, an outpatient limit of $5,000, ten psychologist or psychiatrist visits a year, and maternity care up to $2,500 after a 10-month wait.
  • Where: your selected country of residence plus 175+ other countries.
  • Sign-up: until age 64, renewable once enrolled; a 12-month commitment; $177.50 a month for ages 18–39.

What Complete leaves out

  • Pre-existing conditions. SafetyWing counts any illness or injury treated or diagnosed at any point in your life, or with symptoms in the past two years.
  • US residents. The United States cannot be your declared residence.
  • Flexibility. The 12-month commitment does not suit a stay of three months followed by a return home.

Two other international plans, for comparison

On some lines, other plans go further. Both pages were read November 2, 2026; neither publishes a price.

What to check IMG Global Medical Insurance Cigna Global Health Options
Who can sign up People living outside the US, or intending in good faith to live abroad six months or more a year From age 18, no upper age limit
Medical maximum $5,000,000 (Silver, Gold); $8,000,000 (Platinum) $1,000,000 a year (Silver); $2,000,000 (Gold); paid in full (Platinum); hospital and day-patient care
Evacuation $50,000 on Silver; up to the lifetime maximum on Gold and Platinum Optional module
Outpatient care Not detailed on the page Optional module

Two differences matter for American readers. IMG's eligibility rule is built around time abroad rather than a declared residence country, so a US citizen spending six months or more a year in Morocco may qualify, where Complete excludes a US residence; IMG adds that the plan is not "minimum essential coverage" under the Affordable Care Act. Cigna Global sets no upper age limit at sign-up, where Complete stops at 64.

A travel medical plan, extendable up to 364 days

Travel medical insurance pays for a new illness or injury abroad, hospital stays and transfer to a better-equipped hospital: a narrower route to digital nomad health insurance in Morocco. SafetyWing's Nomad Insurance Essential, as stated on October 30, 2026:

  • Limits: $250,000 overall, evacuation up to $100,000 over your lifetime, no deductible.
  • Length: 5 to 364 days. You can extend while the plan is active, at least 5 days at a time, up to a total of 364 days. SafetyWing does not say what happens after day 364, so ask before relying on a second plan.
  • Price: $62.72 per 4 weeks for ages 10–39; higher age bands cost more.
  • Who: ages 14 days to 69, US residents included.

Visits home during a long stay

Essential pays only limited emergency care in your home country. With one payment for a 364-day period, a visit can last up to 90 days per 180 days of cover, or 45 days if your home country is the US. With other payment options, the limit is 30 days per visit in a rolling 90-day period, or 15 days for the US. The plan must have been active for at least 90 days first, and a trip home to treat something that started abroad is not covered.

What Essential leaves out

  • Pre-existing conditions, beyond a narrow emergency exception.
  • Routine checkups, vaccinations, maternity care, cancer treatment and mental health disorders.
  • Trip cancellation.

US health plans and Medicare abroad

Medicare.gov states that Medicare usually doesn't cover health care outside the US, with some exceptions; the CDC Yellow Book adds that Medicare Advantage plans usually do not either, while some Medigap policies cover part of emergency care abroad, with a deductible, coinsurance and a lifetime maximum.

Employer and marketplace plans vary; the CDC notes that some cover emergencies abroad under specific conditions. Ask yours what it pays in Morocco, for how long, and whether it includes evacuation.

Health care in Morocco: what any plan has to work with

UK government advice describes public facilities in Morocco as limited and private clinics as better; the CDC's Morocco page (reviewed August 2026) suggests considering travel health and medical evacuation insurance.
