The short answer: SafetyWing sells two plans that work in Morocco, and they are built for different people. Nomad Insurance Essential is travel medical insurance: you can buy it for a short trip, even after you land, and it covers emergency care and evacuation but not a canceled trip. Nomad Insurance Complete is a 12-month health plan with routine care and higher limits, but a US resident cannot sign up for it, and it starts only on the 1st or 15th of a month.

How we put this together, and what we are not. We read SafetyWing's two product pages and more than twenty of its help center articles on October 30, 2026, plus CDC and UK government health advice for Morocco. Prices quoted are SafetyWing's headline prices for the youngest adult band, as shown on October 30, 2026; the price calculator can show a different figure, and your quote depends on age and options. We are not insurance brokers or agents, we have not bought or claimed on either plan, and nothing here is personal advice. The plan document decides what gets paid.

Key takeaways

  • SafetyWing's Nomad Insurance Essential covers emergency medical care in Morocco up to $250,000, with medical evacuation up to $100,000 over your lifetime and no deductible, as checked on October 30, 2026.
  • Nomad Insurance Essential does not reimburse a trip canceled before departure.
  • Nomad Insurance Complete cannot be bought with the United States as your country of residence, according to SafetyWing's help center in September 2026.
  • Nomad Insurance Complete has a $1.5 million annual medical limit, routine care and a $300-per-trip cancellation benefit, on a 12-month contract you can sign up for until age 64.
  • Both SafetyWing plans exclude most pre-existing conditions, and neither replaces a trip cancellation policy for large prepaid bookings.

Nomad Insurance Essential vs Complete for Morocco

SafetyWing Nomad Insurance comes in two plans, and SafetyWing itself describes Essential as a plan for short-term nomads and Complete as one for long-term nomads. The table sets the lines that matter for Morocco next to each other. Figures come from SafetyWing's pages and help center, read October 30, 2026.

Nomad Insurance Essential in Morocco

Essential is the plan built around a trip. It pays for a new illness or injury abroad: doctor and clinic visits, a hospital stay, surgery, prescribed medicine, emergency dental care up to $1,000, and a transfer to a better-equipped hospital when a doctor certifies it is needed. Morocco is not on its list of excluded countries.

It fits the way many people plan Morocco. You choose your dates, from 5 days to 364, and you can buy it before you fly or after you arrive. SafetyWing has no overall waiting period, but it asks for extra proof for anything that happens in the first 72 hours after purchase, and recommends buying at least 72 hours ahead.

Families: up to two children under 10 travel on an adult's plan at no extra cost, one per adult, from 14 days old.

What Essential leaves out

  • Trip cancellation. A canceled riad deposit or desert tour is not refunded.
  • Pre-existing conditions, apart from a sudden emergency treated within 24 hours, never in the first 28 days of cover, and never for chronic or congenital conditions. The look-back period is 180 days.
  • Routine care, maternity, cancer treatment and mental health disorders.
  • Injuries while intoxicated, search and rescue, and claims filed more than 60 days after cover ends.
  • Self-arranged evacuation. SafetyWing must approve and arrange the transfer in advance.

Payment works by reimbursement first. Outside the US, you can ask for a guarantee of payment for a hospital admission; SafetyWing decides case by case. UK government advice asks travelers to Morocco to have accessible funds for treatment costs, so plan on paying a smaller bill yourself.

Nomad Insurance Complete in Morocco

Complete is a health plan for people who live abroad, not a trip policy. Beyond emergencies, it pays for routine checkups and vaccines up to $350, doctor and specialist visits within a $5,000 outpatient limit, ten psychologist or psychiatrist visits a year, cancer tests and treatment, and maternity care after a 10-month wait. It covers your selected country of residence as well as the other countries in its 175+ list.

Who can sign up, and when

This is where Complete differs most for an American reader. SafetyWing's help center lists the United States and US territories among the countries you cannot select as your residence (article dated September 26, 2026). A US citizen who actually lives abroad may be eligible if the US is not their country of residence; SafetyWing defines residence as where you spend the most time, by default more than 183 days a year. Morocco is not on the list of excluded residence countries.

Timing is the second filter. The application takes up to 10 days, cover starts on the next 1st or 15th of the month, and the contract runs 12 months. You can cancel without penalty before cover starts or in the first 15 days; after that, a refund depends on the plan or on a qualifying change such as a move or a new job.

What Complete leaves out

  • Pre-existing conditions. SafetyWing's page counts anything diagnosed or treated at any time, or with symptoms in the past two years; the help center adds that a condition counts even without a diagnosis.
  • A full cancellation policy. The $300-per-trip benefit, $600 a year, is small next to a prepaid Morocco tour.
  • Costs above "usual, customary and reasonable" rates, and part of a bill when required pre-approval was skipped.
  • Sports outside its list. Leisure sports injuries are covered up to $250,000, but Complete's product page does not list every covered activity and points to the policy document instead. Before a quad ride, a winter Atlas trek or any motorized activity, read Complete's description of cover and get SafetyWing's confirmation that the activity is included.

Activities on a Morocco trip: what Nomad Insurance Essential says

The rules below are Essential's, from its activity list for the plan version effective February 2026.

How a claim works with each plan

With both plans, expect to pay the clinic first. The difference is in the rules around larger bills.

Essential reimburses you after you file through your SafetyWing account. For a hospital admission outside the US, ask for a guarantee of payment before or at admission. Contact the insurer before any transfer.

Complete adds direct billing for planned treatment of $250 or more, requested at least 7 business days ahead; some providers decline it. Services estimated above $500 need pre-approval, or reimbursement may be cut by 30%. If you pay more than $500 for emergency care, notify SafetyWing within 72 hours to avoid the same cut.

With either plan, keep every invoice, pharmacy receipt and medical report. In Morocco these are often in French, so check SafetyWing's rules on translation before you file.

What neither plan replaces: trip cancellation

If your Morocco trip involves large nonrefundable payments, such as a multi-day desert tour, prepaid riads or a package, neither plan protects them in full. Essential pays nothing for cancellation; Complete pays up to $300 per trip. Cancellation cover is a separate purchase: a comprehensive policy or a cancellation product, which a marketplace can show side by side.

Who each plan is designed for

  • Essential is designed for travelers outside their home country for days to months, US residents included, who want emergency medical and evacuation cover and few extras. It is the only one of the two a US-based vacationer can buy.
  • Complete is designed for people who live abroad for the long term and want ongoing health care, including routine visits and maternity, and whose country of residence is not the US. A two-week holiday does not match its 12-month contract.
  • Neither suits someone whose main concern is a condition under treatment, or a large prepaid trip.

The CDC suggests travelers to Morocco consider travel health and medical evacuation insurance (page reviewed August 2026). Which plan matches your situation is a decision only you can make, with the plan document in hand.

FAQ

Is SafetyWing good for Morocco?

It depends on the plan and your trip. Essential covers emergency care and evacuation in Morocco with no deductible, but excludes pre-existing conditions and trip cancellation. Compare its limits and exclusions with your plans.

Does SafetyWing cover Morocco?

Yes. Morocco is not on Essential's excluded country list, and it is not among the residence countries Complete excludes (SafetyWing Help Center, checked October 30, 2026).

Can an American buy Nomad Insurance Complete?

Not with the United States as the country of residence. A US citizen who actually lives abroad may be eligible if the US is not their country of residence, meaning where they spend the most time. US residents can buy Essential.

Does SafetyWing cover quad biking in Morocco?

Treat it as not covered unless SafetyWing confirms otherwise in writing: Essential's list names quad biking as an Adventure Sports add-on activity but also names all-terrain vehicles as never covered.

Can I buy SafetyWing once I am in Morocco?

Essential, yes, with extra proof required for incidents in the first 72 hours. Complete needs up to 10 days of review and starts on the 1st or 15th.
