The short answer: the best places to see in Morocco on a first trip are Marrakech, Fes, Chefchaouen, the Sahara dunes at Merzouga, Aït Ben Haddou and the southern gorges, the High Atlas, Essaouira and Casablanca. They sit far apart, so the real question is which multi-day tour links the ones you want. Three tours do most of the work: a 3-day Sahara tour from Marrakech, a 4-day private imperial cities tour from Marrakech, and a 6-day private tour from Casablanca to Marrakech.
How we put this together. Places were chosen on the four criteria below. Tour details come from the GetYourGuide listings, read October 14–16, 2026: we report what each listing states, not first-hand impressions.
Key takeaways
- Marrakech, Fes, Chefchaouen and the Sahara dunes of Merzouga are the four places most first-time visitors to Morocco try to fit into one trip.
- Chefchaouen has no train station (ONCF), and the Merzouga dunes are reached by road on the tours below, so a tour or a private driver is the simplest way to see both.
- A one-way private tour from Casablanca to Marrakech can cover the imperial cities, Chefchaouen and the Sahara in a single trip.

How we chose the best places to visit in Morocco
Most lists of places to travel in Morocco stop at the photo. Each place here passed four tests:
- Each adds something no other stop gives you: a different city, landscape or climate.
- Each is recognized beyond travel blogs: a UNESCO World Heritage listing or a landscape found nowhere else in the country, like the Erg Chebbi dunes.
- A day trip or a multi-day tour sold from Marrakech or Casablanca actually goes there, so you are not left with a beautiful place and no way to reach it.
- It rewards a first visit, without special gear or a 4x4 expedition.
Marrakech, the High Atlas and Essaouira: your base in the south
Marrakech is where most first trips start, and where most tours leave from or end. The UNESCO-listed medina is the reason to come: souks, riads, Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk. The tours below pick you up at your hotel or riad; if you sleep inside the medina, ask which gate.

The High Atlas starts about an hour and a quarter from the city, and the Sahara tours from Marrakech cross it by the Tizi n'Tichka pass. To walk through the villages below Jbel Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak at about 4,167 m (13,671 ft), take a separate day trip.
Essaouira is the cool, windy counterweight: in July its average high is about 71°F, against roughly 100°F in Marrakech, per NOAA data. About two and a half hours west by road, it is on none of the three tours below, so plan it as a separate day trip from Marrakech, ideally on a free day before or after your tour.
Fes, Meknes and Chefchaouen: the imperial north
Fes is the city most visitors have not pictured. Its old medina, Fes el-Bali, is a working city of lanes too narrow for cars, with tanneries, madrasas and workshops you reach on foot, best explored the first time with a licensed local guide.

Meknes and Volubilis, near Fes, pair an imperial city with Roman ruins, both UNESCO-listed.
Chefchaouen, in the Rif Mountains, is the blue town of a thousand photos: small, quiet after the medinas, lovely in late-afternoon light, and without a train station.
The tour that links them. For the north without the desert, the four-day private imperial cities tour is the tidiest answer. The listing leaves Marrakech for Casablanca and the Hassan II Mosque, crosses the Middle Atlas by Azrou and Ifrane, spends two nights in Fes and one in Chefchaouen, then returns to Marrakech by way of Rabat, with your own driver. Meknes and Volubilis are on the six-day tour below, not this one. It was rated 4.7 out of 5 from 40 reviews on GetYourGuide, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start.

Aït Ben Haddou, the gorges and the Sahara: the deep south
Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes are the picture most people have of Morocco: orange sand, a camel ride at sunset, a night in camp. They are also the farthest point on this list: on the three-day tour below, you are back in Marrakech around 8 p.m. on day 3 (time not guaranteed).

Aït Ben Haddou, the earthen ksar UNESCO listed in 1987, sits on that road, about three hours from Marrakech. Further east, the Dades and Todra gorges break up the drive with canyon walls and palm groves.
From Marrakech, two tours reach all three: one shared or private in three days, one private in four.
If you want the desert and nothing else, look at the most-reviewed three-day Merzouga tour from Marrakech: 4.9 out of 5 from more than 23,000 reviews on GetYourGuide, private or shared, your choice. It runs via Aït Ben Haddou and the Todra Gorge to a night in Erg Chebbi; lunches are extra.
If you want the desert with your own driver, the four-day private Atlas and desert tour from Marrakech showed 4.7 out of 5 from 202 reviews, from $428 per person as of October 15, 2026, guide and meals included.

Casablanca and Rabat: the whole country in one trip
If your flight lands in Casablanca, the city's highlight is the Hassan II Mosque, built partly over the Atlantic and open to non-Muslim visitors on paid guided visits, several a day and fewer on Fridays; check the foundation's visits page for seasonal times. Rabat, up the coast, is the calm, green capital, with an old kasbah above the river mouth.

The tour that starts here. If you land in Casablanca and want Morocco end to end, look first at the six-day private tour from Casablanca to Marrakech. Its listing runs from the Hassan II Mosque and Rabat to a first night in Chefchaouen, then Volubilis and Meknes, two nights in Fes, a night in an Erg Chebbi camp, a night in the Dades Gorges, and Aït Ben Haddou on the way over the High Atlas to Marrakech. That is six of the eight places here, with only Essaouira and a deeper look at the High Atlas left out, and no backtracking. Local guides in Fes and Chefchaouen, five breakfasts and five dinners and the camel ride are included. Pickup is at your hotel; the listing does not mention the airport, so plan a night in Casablanca or ask the operator first. It was rated 4.6 out of 5 from 57 reviews on GetYourGuide.

How to choose a multi-day tour operator
Before you book a multi-day tour in Morocco
0 / 5 doneIs a multi-day tour worth it?
For most first trips that include Chefchaouen or the Sahara, yes, in our reading: neither is on the railway, and a tour turns days of logistics into one booking. For Marrakech, Fes and Rabat alone, trains do the job: ONCF links all three.
Our verdict
A private multi-day tour of Morocco
Worth it for the desert or Chefchaouen on a first trip, if you accept long days on the road.
What works
- Chefchaouen and the Sahara without juggling buses and transfers
- Local guides in Fes and Chefchaouen on the 4-day and 6-day private listings
- Your own pace, stops and vehicle
What doesn't
- A lot of time in a vehicle
- Little time to linger in any one city
- Private tours cost far more than trains and buses
Skip it, or choose something lighter, if:
- You would rather stay put, or your budget is tight: base yourself in Marrakech, add day trips and take the train.
Don't forget insurance
Check your cover before the camel ride. Camel rides, sandboarding and long drives on mountain roads are where travel medical cover matters most, and some policies exclude adventure activities unless they are listed. Read the policy wording, including medical evacuation. We are not insurance agents, and this is general information, not advice.

FAQ

Marrakech, Fes, Chefchaouen and the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga, then Aït Ben Haddou and the gorges, the High Atlas, Essaouira, and Casablanca with Rabat.
Which tour covers the most places in Morocco?
The six-day private tour from Casablanca to Marrakech: six of the eight places above, all but Essaouira and a deeper look at the High Atlas.
How many days do these tours take?
Three days for the Sahara from Marrakech, four for the imperial cities and Chefchaouen, six for Casablanca to Marrakech via the north and the desert.
How much do multi-day tours cost?
As of October 15, 2026, from $129 per person for the 3-day Sahara tour, $652 for the 4-day private imperial cities tour and $968 for the 6-day private tour. Prices change by date and party size.
When is the best time to visit Morocco?
Spring and autumn suit touring best, according to Moroccan tour operators. In July, Marrakech averages a high of about 100°F (NOAA data).
Can I see these places without a tour?
Yes, for most of these Morocco travel destinations. Trains link Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat, Meknes and Fes; Chefchaouen and Essaouira have no train station, so you reach them by bus, private driver or tour. In our view, a tour earns its price mainly for the Sahara and the south.
