The short answer: for a first hammam in Marrakech, we'd pick a spa hammam, because it's private, each step is explained, and it's still built on the real ritual of steam, black soap and a hard scrub. The local public bath is the authentic, very cheap version, and worth it if you go in knowing the routine and bringing your own kit. The ritual is one of the experiences we rank in our guide to the best experiences in Marrakech for each kind of traveler.

How we put this together. Most prices come from one source, a local price guide (Marrakech Private) updated in October 2026; we name it next to each figure. Royal Mansour's prices come from its own spa menu, read the same month. The step-by-step sequence is the traditional one, which public and spa hammams share. Where a spa did not show its prices on the page we read, we print none.

Key takeaways

  • A hammam in Marrakech follows the same sequence in a public bath and in a spa: warm steam, black olive soap, a scrub with a rough glove called a kessa, a rinse, and often a clay mask.
  • Public hammams in Marrakech cost about 10 to 40 dirhams to enter, according to a local price guide updated in October 2026, with the attendant's scrub paid separately.
  • According to the same Marrakech price guide, spa hammams in riads and day spas cost about 200 to 990 dirhams, and palace hotel spas from about 900 dirhams up.
  • Public hammams in Marrakech separate men and women, so couples who want to share the experience need a spa hammam with a private room.
  • Visitors to a public hammam in Morocco usually bring their own black soap, kessa glove, sandals and towel.

The local public hammam

Every medina neighborhood has one, often next to the mosque and the bread oven. You pay at the door, undress in the changing area, and wash in a series of warm and hot rooms with buckets of water. An attendant will scrub you for an extra fee if you ask. Hammam Mouassine, a long-running neighborhood hammam beside the Mouassine mosque, charges 10 dirhams to enter and 170 for the full scrub; at Hammam Bab Doukkala, entry and scrub run about 20 dirhams each (Marrakech Private, October 2026).

Men and women bathe separately, through different doors or at different hours. Ask at the door which applies. Many bathers keep their underwear on; bring a spare pair to change into.

The riad or day-spa hammam

A spa hammam is the same ritual, staged for visitors: a private steam room, an attendant who explains each step, then tea and often a massage. Riad and day-spa hammams cost between 200 and 990 dirhams depending on length and add-ons, for example 500 to 900 at Hammam de la Rose (Marrakech Private, October 2026). Les Bains de Marrakech, near Bab Agnaou in the Kasbah, sells formulas of one to four treatments over one to four hours, with duo baths for couples; booking is required (official site, October 2026). The spa's treatments page showed no prices when we read it, so we print none: ask for the current price of each formula when you book.

The palace hotel spa

The top tier: marble, calm and a long ritual. A 60-minute traditional hammam costs 1,300 dirhams at La Mamounia and 900 at La Sultana (Marrakech Private, October 2026); Royal Mansour's hammam rituals run from 1,600 to 3,400 dirhams (spa menu, October 2026). You pay for the setting, not for a different scrub.

What happens in a hammam, step by step

Public baths and spas follow the same order. Times are approximate for a one-hour visit without massage.

  1. 0–10 min

    Undress and settle in

Swimsuit or underwear stays on in a public bath. In a spa, you get disposable underwear and a robe.

  2. 10–20 min

    Steam and warm water

You sit or lie in the warm room while your skin softens. Drink water before and after.

  3. 20–30 min

    Black soap

Savon beldi, a dark olive paste, goes on all over and sits for a few minutes.

  4. 30–45 min

    The kessa scrub

A rough glove takes off dead skin in grey rolls. It's firm; tell the attendant if it's too much.

  5. 45–60 min

    Clay mask and rinse

Often a rhassoul clay mask, then buckets of water. In a spa, tea and sometimes a massage follow.

What to bring, and how to choose a spa

Before your first hammam in Marrakech

0 / 9 done

Heat isn't for everyone. The warm rooms and the hard scrub are a strain for some people. If you're pregnant, have a heart condition or high blood pressure, or have broken skin or sunburn, ask a doctor before you go and tell the attendant before you start. This is general information, not medical advice.

Hotel hammams: a third way

Some riads and hotels have their own hammam, which saves you a walk back across the medina when all you want is to lie down. If that matters, filter for it when you book, and compare neighborhoods first with our guide to where to stay in Marrakech: medina, Gueliz or Hivernage.

Is a hammam in Marrakech worth it?

Yes. It's one of the few experiences that is still part of daily life in the city, and it's cheap at the bottom tier. Pair it with something calm on the same day, such as a morning cooking class in Marrakech, rather than a long day trip.

Our verdict

Hammam in Marrakech

Worth it for almost everyone, once. A spa hammam is the easier first visit; a public bath is the real one, if you know the routine.

What works

  • Daily life, not a show, at the public tier
  • A good reset after days of walking
  • Duo rooms for couples in spas

What doesn't

  • Shared nudity in public baths
  • Prices for the same ritual vary by more than 100 times
  • The scrub is firmer than most expect

Skip it, or choose something else, if:

  • You're uncomfortable undressing in front of strangers and don't want to pay for a private spa room.
  • You're pregnant or have a heart condition and haven't asked a doctor.
  • You only want a massage: book a massage, not a full hammam ritual.

FAQ

How much is a hammam in Marrakech?

In October 2026, a local price guide (Marrakech Private) listed about 10 to 40 dirhams to enter a public hammam, 200 to 990 dirhams in a riad or day spa, and from about 900 dirhams in a palace hotel spa.

What do you wear to a hammam in Morocco?

Underwear or a swimsuit bottom in a public bath, with sandals. Spas give you disposable underwear and a robe.

Can couples go to a hammam together in Marrakech?

Not in a public bath, where men and women are separated. Many riad and day-spa hammams offer duo rooms: ask when you book.

Do you tip at a hammam in Marrakech?

Yes, if you're happy: about 10 to 20 dirhams to the attendant in a public bath, about 50 in a spa, and 50 to 100 in a palace spa, according to a local price guide (Marrakech Private, October 2026).

How often should you do a hammam?

On a short trip, we'd book one. The scrub is firm, and we'd give your skin a few days before another one.
