The short answer: the best airport to fly into Morocco is the one closest to the region you will see first. For most first trips that is Marrakech (RAK): the medina, the High Atlas and the road to the desert all start there. Choose Casablanca (CMN) for the widest choice of long-haul nonstop flights, Fes (FEZ) or Tangier (TNG) for the north, and Agadir (AGA) for a week on the Atlantic coast.
How we put this together. No airline pays us. Airport rankings use the 2025 traffic figures of ONDA, Morocco's airport authority; routes come from airline announcements, dated press reports and public route listings; the airport train details from ONCF's own page. Everything was checked October 20–24, 2026, and each fact's source and date sit in our source list. Routes change every season: check the airline's schedule for your dates.
Choosing your airports is step three in our first-timer's guide to planning a trip to Morocco, in order. This page settles that step.
Key takeaways
- Marrakech Menara is the best airport to fly into Morocco for a first trip covering the south, the Atlas Mountains or the Sahara.
- Casablanca Mohammed V is Morocco's busiest airport and the hub of Royal Air Maroc, which gives it more long-haul nonstop flights than any other Moroccan airport.
- Fes and Tangier suit a trip focused on northern Morocco; most of their international routes serve Europe, while Air Arabia also sells Tangier–Istanbul flights.
- Flying into one Moroccan airport and home from another saves a day of backtracking on most trips of a week or more.
What airport do you fly into for Morocco? Start with the region
Moroccan regions sit hours apart: ONCF's published guide puts Marrakech to Fes at about 6 hours 35 minutes by train. Landing at the wrong end costs you a travel day, so rank the airports by the region you visit first, not by size.
| Airport | Region it serves | Best for | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marrakech (RAK) | Marrakech, the High Atlas, the road to the Sahara, Essaouira | Most first trips | Many flights from Europe; sits just outside the city | Few long-haul nonstops, and some are seasonal |
| Casablanca (CMN) | Casablanca, Rabat, and routes heading north first | Long-haul arrivals | Royal Air Maroc's hub; train station at the airport | Far from the south: about 2 h 35 by train to Marrakech |
| Fes (FEZ) | Fes, Meknes, Volubilis, the Middle Atlas | Ending a Marrakech–desert–Fes route | Ryanair flights from Europe | Fewer flights, mostly short-haul; outside the city |
| Tangier (TNG) | Tangier, Chefchaouen, the Mediterranean north | Starting or ending in the north | Al Boraq high-speed line to Rabat and Casablanca | Far from the south and the desert |
| Agadir (AGA) | The Atlantic south: beaches, Taghazout, the Souss | A beach week | Many European leisure flights | About 3 hours by road from Marrakech |
Smaller airports fit narrow cases: Essaouira and Ouarzazate, where Ryanair strengthened its presence for winter 2026-27; Royal Air Maroc's domestic network also reaches Ouarzazate. Use them only if a flight lines up with your route.
Fes, Tangier and Agadir airports sit outside their cities: plan your ride into town before you land, with the official taxi rank or a pre-booked transfer.
Marrakech (RAK): the south, the Atlas and the desert
Marrakech Menara is Morocco's second-busiest airport. The classic first route begins here: the medina, then over the High Atlas toward the Sahara. Sahara tours leave from Marrakech, and some end in Fes: check where each tour ends before you book.

Which airlines fly to Marrakech? Royal Air Maroc and, mostly from Europe, low-cost airlines such as Ryanair, easyJet and Transavia. United also advertises a direct flight from Newark; check its schedule for your dates.
The airport sits just outside the city. At the official kech.cab arrivals counter, taxi fares are known in advance, fixed by destination and prepaid by card or cash, according to ONDA. If you land after dark with luggage and a medina riad, where cars stop at a gate, a pre-booked driver is simpler.

Casablanca (CMN): Royal Air Maroc's hub and the most nonstops
Casablanca Mohammed V is Morocco's busiest airport and the hub of Royal Air Maroc, the national airline, whose published network spans Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas.
What airlines fly to Casablanca? Royal Air Maroc, Emirates and several European airlines. Emirates sells travel between Dubai and Casablanca; check its live schedule for your date.
Casablanca airport to Marrakech: train or connecting flight
This is the most likely first day for a long-haul traveler: land in Casablanca, sleep in Marrakech. You have two ways to cover it.
| Criterion | Train, change at Casa-Voyageurs | Connecting Royal Air Maroc flight |
|---|---|---|
| Time | 5-min walk to the airport station, a short ride to Casa-Voyageurs, then about 2 h 35 to Marrakech | A short domestic flight, plus the connection |
| Frequency | One airport train an hour, first at 5:30 a.m., last at 11 p.m. | Varies by day: check the schedule |
| Price | From 198 DH (about $20) airport to Marrakech | Priced into your ticket when booked together |
| Where to buy | oncf-voyages.ma, the ONCF VOYAGES app or the station ticket office | With your international ticket |
| Best for | Daytime landings, light bags | Late landings, a bag checked through |
Train times, fares and the walk are ONCF's, as of October 2026. From arrivals, follow the "Gare ONCF" signs along a covered walkway. Counting the change, allow well over three hours by train, our estimate. Check your date on oncf-voyages.ma because timetables can change.
Our take: land in the morning and take the train south the same day; land in the evening and the connecting flight, or a night in Casablanca, is the calmer choice.
Fes (FEZ): the imperial cities and the end of a desert route
Fès-Saïss is a much smaller airport. ONDA's published international connections are primarily European; from farther away, you may need to connect through Casablanca or a European airport.
Fes works best as your exit. A route crossing the desert from Marrakech can end here, and flying home from Fes saves the roughly 6-hour-35-minute train back shown in ONCF's published guide.
Tangier (TNG): the north and Chefchaouen
Tangier Ibn Battouta's flights include low-cost routes from Europe; Transavia lists a Nantes service for winter 2026.

Tangier makes sense when the north is your focus: the Moroccan tourism office puts Chefchaouen about 2 hours 11 minutes away by road. Fes is reachable by rail, while the Al Boraq high-speed train directly links Tangier to Rabat and Casablanca, so you can fly home long-haul from Casablanca.
Agadir (AGA): the Atlantic south and a beach week
Agadir Al Massira is Morocco's third-busiest airport. Its flights lean toward European leisure travel: easyJet, Ryanair and Transavia, alongside Royal Air Maroc.

Marrakech is about 3 hours away by road. Skip Agadir for a first trip built on Marrakech, the desert and Fes; choose it when the beach is the point.
Direct flights to Morocco
Most flights to Morocco are short hops from Europe. Long-haul nonstops are few, and most land in Casablanca.
- North America
- Royal Air Maroc's published Casablanca network includes Los Angeles, Miami, Montreal, New York, Toronto and Washington. United advertises a direct Newark–Marrakech route; check each airline's schedule for your dates

- Fes and Tangier
- Fes' published international connections are primarily European. Tangier is not Europe-only: Air Arabia currently sells direct Tangier–Istanbul flights
- Before you book
- Many of these routes are seasonal: check the airline's schedule for your dates
Otherwise you connect, in a European hub or in Casablanca, where Royal Air Maroc's domestic network continues to Marrakech, Fes or Agadir on the same ticket. What those tickets cost, and when to buy, is in our guide to cheap flights to Morocco: when to book and which month costs less.
Arrive by one airport, leave by another
On a trip of a week or more, a multi-city ticket, most often Marrakech in and Fes out, saves the day you would spend backtracking; how to price one is in the flights guide linked above. Before you buy, check the entry rules for your passport. Once the airports are fixed, book your first nights near the place you land.
