The short answer: for a Marrakech airport transfer, match the ride to your arrival. Landing in daylight and staying in Gueliz or Hivernage, the official airport taxi at a fixed fare is enough. Landing after dark, with children, or heading to a riad deep in the medina, pre-book a private transfer or your riad's own pickup: the driver waits with your name and knows which gate is closest to your door. The ALSA 19 bus suits light packers on a daytime budget arrival.
How we put this together. The taxi system, the bus line and the airport services described here come from ONDA, Morocco's airport authority, the City of Marrakech's bus timetable and press reports on the taxi counter, all checked in October 2026. ONDA does not publish its fixed taxi fares online in a form we could read, so we tell you how the system works rather than print a number that may have changed.
The arrival is one of the decisions covered in our guide to getting around Morocco by train, bus, taxi or car. This page goes deeper on the first ride: from Menara airport to the door of your hotel or riad.
Key takeaways
- Marrakech Menara airport opened an official taxi counter, kech.cab, in 2023, where arriving passengers prepay a fixed fare set by destination by ONDA and local authorities.
- ALSA bus line 19 links Marrakech airport with Gueliz and the city center, running roughly every 30 minutes from early morning to evening.
- No car can reach most riads inside the Marrakech medina, so every airport ride to a medina riad ends at a gate or a square, followed by a short walk.
- A pre-booked private transfer is the simplest choice for a first arrival in Marrakech after dark, because the driver waits with a name sign and knows the drop-off point.
- Hotels in Gueliz, Hivernage and the Palmeraie are reachable by car to the door, so an official taxi is usually enough for a daytime arrival there.
Marrakech airport transfer options at a glance
| Option | Best for | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked private transfer | Night arrivals, medina riads, families | Driver waits with your name, fixed price, knows the gate | Costs more than a taxi; book a day or more ahead |
| Riad or hotel pickup | Guests of places that offer it | The driver often walks you to the door | Not every riad offers it; price varies |
| Official airport taxi (kech.cab) | Daytime arrivals in Gueliz, Hivernage | Fixed fare by destination, no haggling | Queue at busy times; drops you at the gate, not the riad |
| ALSA bus 19 | Light packers on a budget | Public city bus, per-person ticket | Limited hours; stops away from most riad doors |
Our take: on a first trip, the money you save with the taxi is worth less than the time you could spend looking for a riad door in the dark, with luggage. Pay for the pickup once; take taxis after that.
Which option for your neighborhood
Where you sleep matters more than any price difference. The question is simple: can a car stop at your door?
| Where you stay | Can a car reach the door? | Best ride from the airport |
|---|---|---|
| Medina riad | Rarely: cars stop at a gate or square | Pre-booked transfer or riad pickup |
| Gueliz | Yes | Official taxi; bus 19 by day |
| Hivernage | Yes | Official taxi |
| Palmeraie | Yes, but it sits outside the city | Private transfer or hotel shuttle |
The medina is where most first-timers stay, and where the arrival is hardest: lanes are too narrow for cars, and map apps lose their way in the derbs. Gueliz and Hivernage, the modern districts between the airport and the old city, have hotels on proper streets where any taxi can pull up. The Palmeraie resorts sit farther out, to the north of the city; many arrange their own shuttle, so ask yours before you book anything else.

Which option for your arrival time
- Morning to late afternoon. Any option works. The official taxi is the simplest for a hotel; for a medina riad, ask the riad to send someone to meet the taxi at the gate.
- Evening. Pre-book a transfer for a medina riad: by the time you clear passport control and collect your bags, it may be dark. A hotel in Gueliz or Hivernage is still fine by taxi.
- Late night or after midnight. Pre-book, wherever you stay. The bus has stopped, and you want someone already waiting when you walk out.
Ask at the kech.cab counter whether a different fare applies at night: ONDA does not publish its fare grid online.
Send your flight number, not just a time. Give your driver or riad the flight number: if the plane is late, the pickup moves with it.
Getting to a medina riad: the last few hundred yards
Every medina arrival ends the same way: the car stops at the nearest point a vehicle can reach, and you walk. Your riad knows that point. Typical drop-off points include, for example, Bab Doukkala, the area around Bab Agnaou in the Kasbah, or the edges of Jemaa el-Fnaa: confirm yours with the riad.

- When you book the riad, ask which gate or square to use and whether someone will meet you there.
- Before you fly, send your flight number and a photo of yourself or your luggage if they ask.
- At the drop-off, wait for the person named by the riad. Many riads send a porter with a cart for bags; ask whether there is a fee.
Unrequested guides at the gate. Near the medina gates, some men offer to lead you to your riad, then ask for money. Decline politely and wait for the person your riad sent, or call the riad.
A phone that works the moment you land makes this part far easier: a message to the riad, the location pin, a call if nobody is at the gate. Our guide to setting up a Morocco eSIM before you fly covers that step.
The official airport taxi: how kech.cab works
ONDA, the airport authority, set up a single counter called kech.cab to end the haggling that used to greet arriving passengers. It works like this, according to ONDA's announcement and press reports from its launch:
- After baggage claim, follow the signs to the kech.cab counter.
- Give your destination and pay by card or in cash. The fare is fixed by destination, set jointly by ONDA and local authorities.
- Scan your receipt at the terminal next to the counter: you get a ticket with your taxi number and your place in the queue.
- Hand the ticket to your driver and agree nothing extra.
At its launch in 2023, the system was announced to run around the clock, with online pre-ordering as an option. We could not confirm from ONDA how it runs today, so do not count on ordering online: when you land, ask in the arrivals hall whether the kech.cab counter is open. If it is not, use the official taxi rank on the airport forecourt, where ONDA says the fares are posted, and agree the price before you get in.
Rides offered in the arrivals hall. Drivers sometimes approach passengers before they reach the counter. The fixed fare only applies through kech.cab: go to the counter, or walk straight to your pre-booked driver.
The ALSA 19 bus
ALSA runs Marrakech's city buses, and line 19 is the airport line. The City of Marrakech's timetable shows it running between the airport and Gueliz roughly every 30 minutes, from about 6 am to 9 pm, with a ride of about 30 minutes. ONDA's airport page mentions a city–airport shuttle about every 20 minutes, so the two official sources do not agree on frequency: check the posted times, the fare and where to buy the ticket at the airport bus stop.
It works for a daytime arrival at a Gueliz hotel with one bag. For a medina riad, you still have a walk from the stop to the riad, so it saves money but not effort. Check the stops on the bus's route map before you rely on one near your riad.
Private transfer: what you are paying for
A pre-booked transfer is a fixed-price car with a driver who meets you in arrivals. What makes it worth it on a first night:
- A name sign at arrivals, so you skip the counter and the queue.
- A price agreed before you fly, paid online.
- Flight tracking, on services that offer it, so a delay does not cost you the pickup. Ask how long the driver waits and whether the flight is tracked before you pay.
- A driver who knows the drop-off point for your riad, and often helps with bags to the gate.
Ask for a child seat when you book if you travel with young kids: availability varies by company.

How much is a taxi from Marrakech airport to the medina?
The official kech.cab counter charges a fixed fare by destination, set by ONDA and local authorities. Check the posted price at the counter when you land: ONDA does not publish the fare grid online.
Can a taxi drop me at my riad's door?
Rarely. Most medina lanes are closed to cars, so the taxi stops at the nearest gate or square. Ask your riad to meet you there.
Is there a bus from Marrakech airport to the city?
Yes. ALSA line 19 runs between the airport and Gueliz roughly every 30 minutes, from about 6 am to 9 pm.
Should I book my Marrakech airport transfer in advance?
Yes, if you land after dark, travel with kids or stay in the medina. For a daytime arrival at a hotel in Gueliz or Hivernage, the official taxi is enough.
Does my riad offer airport pickup?
Many do, sometimes for a fee. Ask when you book, and confirm the pickup in writing with your flight number.
How long is the ride from Marrakech airport to the medina?
It is a short drive, as the airport sits just outside the city; the time depends on traffic and on which gate you are dropped at. Add the walk from the gate to your riad.
