The short answer: no, Morocco is not expensive to visit for most first-timers. Two travelers sharing a simple riad room spend about $320–420 each for a week, and a mid-range week runs about $550–830 per person, at September–October 2026 prices. It gets expensive in two places only: resort hotels and private tours. Flights are not in these totals, because their price depends entirely on where you fly from.

How we put this together. Every priced purchase below comes from a dated listing or a direct operator: rooms from Booking.com, tours from GetYourGuide and TourRadar, entry tickets from official sites, and food allowances bounded by three published Marrakech menus, checked through October 24, 2026. We then added them up for one route, at three travel styles. Dirham prices are converted at Bank Al-Maghrib's reference rate of October 2, 2026: 9.85 MAD to the dollar. Each total adds the lines of its table, rounded to the nearest $10. These are estimates, not quotes: check the live price for your dates.

These totals cover the money side of a first trip; the full order of decisions, from the season to the last tour, is in our first-timer's guide to planning a trip to Morocco.

Key takeaways

  • A budget week in Morocco costs about $320–420 per person for two travelers sharing a simple riad room, flights excluded, at October 2026 prices.
  • A mid-range week in Morocco costs about $550–830 per person, and 10 days about $840–1,280, flights excluded.
  • Rooms and a multi-day desert tour are the two biggest costs of a Morocco trip; meals and taxis stay small at every travel style.
  • Published Marrakech menus checked in October 2026 run from 25 MAD for harira at a medina café to 240 MAD for a main dish at an upscale restaurant.
  • A solo traveler pays the full room rate, so the accommodation line roughly doubles compared with two people sharing.

Is Morocco expensive to visit? It depends on your style

Food, entry tickets and city taxis cost little at any style. What moves the total is the bed and how you cross the country: in a shared minibus or with your own driver.

Travel style Best for Pros Cons
Budget First trip on a tight budget Same medina, same dunes, for a fraction Simple rooms; shared tour runs on fixed times
Mid-range Most couples Riads with character near the sights; a guided walk and a good hammam Desert tour still shared
Comfort Travelers who want space and their own driver Big pools, private desert tour, spa Rooms and private tours roughly double the total or more

Where you sleep: the line that decides your total

Rooms are priced per room, so two people split them. In a simple medina riad, that is about $20–43 each per night; in a mid-range riad, $45–95; in a resort hotel, $75–250. Breakfast is usually included in riads, which takes one meal off the food line.

These room rates were read in September. Spring, like fall, is Marrakech's high season, per Lonely Planet, and the city's hotel association says hotels usually fill up over New Year (Hespress, December 2025). On those dates, the September rates above may not hold: price your nights for your exact dates. Ask whether the local tourist tax is in the price: the legal range is 10–25 MAD per person, per night for riads and tourist rentals, while other property categories range from 2 to 30 MAD; the municipality fixes the exact rate. Neighborhood by neighborhood, the trade-offs are in our guide to where to stay in Marrakech.

Food: the line that stays small

For a dated benchmark, Café des Épices lists harira at 25 MAD and sandwiches at 50–60 MAD, Marrakchiya lists main dishes at 70–110 MAD, and Nomad lists main dishes at 130–240 MAD plus a 9% service charge, as of October 24, 2026.

Using those published menus as bounds, we budgeted lunch, dinner and drinks every day, breakfast being in the room rate: about 100 MAD ($10) a day on a budget, 220 MAD ($22) mid-range, and 335 MAD ($34) at comfort level. Dining in palace hotels is not in these totals. Some multi-day tours include breakfasts and dinners, so the food line errs high on tour days.

Getting around: cheap, except the first ride

For these totals, we set aside about 27 MAD ($2.75) per person for each city day as a local transport allowance. It is not a quoted taxi fare: Marrakech taxis use regulated rates, but the tourism office does not publish the city meter tariff on its transport page.

Between cities, ONCF shows the exact Marrakech–Fes fare when you search; its published timetable confirms the route but does not list a ticket price. Our route below needs no train, because the desert tour ends in Fes. The ride from the airport is not in the totals. In Marrakech, the kech.cab counter has a fixed fare posted at the counter, and a private transfer is quoted when you book. Landing in Casablanca, the airport train to Marrakech starts at 198 MAD (about $20), with one departure an hour from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., per ONCF.

The desert tour: the second-biggest line

A shared 3-day tour from Marrakech to Fes, through a Merzouga camp, starts from $136 per person, in groups of up to 18. A private version of the same route starts from $480 per person, for at least two travelers, a discounted price that may require signing up (both as of October 2026). That gap is the single largest jump between budget and comfort.

Shared day trips cost little: $13 to Essaouira from Marrakech, $26 to Chefchaouen from Fes. A private car and driver for a day runs about €90–180 depending on the vehicle, as of October 2026.

Extras: sights, a guide, a hammam

The three big medina sights in Marrakech cost 250 MAD ($25) together: Bahia Palace and Le Jardin Secret at 100 MAD each, Ben Youssef Madrasa at 50. A half-day medina walk with a licensed guide is listed at $25, and a private tour at $40–60; the operator does not say per person or per group, so our totals count them per person, the cautious choice.

A public hammam costs about 10–40 MAD with the scrub, though one Marrakech bath charges 170 MAD extra for a full scrub done for you. A riad or day spa runs 200–990 MAD, and a palace spa 900–3,400 MAD. A cooking class runs 400–500 MAD at the Amal nonprofit, or $74 at La Maison Arabe.

How much does a week trip to Morocco cost?

The route: two nights in Marrakech, the 3-day desert tour to Fes (two nights included), then two nights in Fes, so four nights you pay for yourself. Per person, two sharing a room. We priced the Fes nights at the Marrakech rates above; riads in Fes's old medina list from about $33–135 a night for a double room on Booking.com, so this errs on the high side.

Line, per person Budget Mid-range Comfort
Rooms, 4 nights $80–170 $180–380 $300–1,000
Food, 7 days about $70 about $155 about $240
Local transport allowance, 4 city days about $11 about $11 about $11
Desert tour, 3 days $136 shared $136 shared $480 private
Sights, guide, hammam $26–29 $70–150 $155–430
Total, one week about $320–420 about $550–830 about $1,190–2,160

That is roughly $45–60 a day on a budget and $80–120 mid-range. The extras line covers, on a budget, the three sights' tickets ($25) and a public hammam (10–40 MAD); mid-range, the tickets, the $25 half-day guided walk and a riad or day-spa hammam (200–990 MAD); at comfort level, the tickets, a $40–60 private guide and a palace spa (900–3,400 MAD).

Add a tips pot. These totals leave tips out. As indicative ranges, round up or leave about 5–10% in cafés and casual restaurants and 10–15% in smarter ones; a hammam attendant gets 10–100 MAD depending on the place, and guides and drivers expect a tip too.

How much does a 10 day trip to Morocco cost?

Same route, with four nights in Marrakech and three in Fes: seven nights you pay for, a day trip from each city, and a cooking class. How those extra days fit a first trip is laid out in our Morocco itinerary guide.

Line, per person Budget Mid-range Comfort
Rooms, 7 nights $140–300 $315–665 $525–1,750
Food, 10 days about $100 about $220 about $340
Local transport allowance, 7 city days about $19 about $19 about $19
Desert tour, 3 days $136 $136 $480
Two shared day trips $39 $39 $39
Sights, guide, hammam, class $67–70 $111–201 $230–505
Total, 10 days about $500–660 about $840–1,280 about $1,630–3,130

Add your flight. Add the live round-trip fare for your departure city and dates to the land total above. Even after that, the result still excludes accommodation taxes, insurance, tips, an eSIM and airport transfers.
