The short answer: do I need travel insurance for Morocco? Not to get in: Morocco does not ask American tourists for proof of insurance at entry (UK and French government travel advice, Sep 2026). The real question is who pays if you get sick or hurt. Medicare usually does not cover care outside the US, your own plan may pay little abroad, and medical evacuation is rarely included. That gap is what a travel policy is for.

How we compared, and what we are not. Everything below comes from primary sources — Medicare, the CDC, government travel advisories, Moroccan health authorities and insurers' own policy wording — each dated in the list at the end. We are not insurance brokers or agents, we take no commission decisions for you, and nothing here is personal advice: read the policy wording for your own trip.

Key takeaways

  • Travel insurance is not an entry requirement for American tourists in Morocco, but it can pay costs that a US health plan does not cover abroad.
  • Medicare usually does not pay for health care outside the United States; Medigap plans C, D, F, G, M and N cover part of foreign travel emergencies.
  • UK government travel advice rates private clinics in Morocco above public health facilities.
  • Travel policies differ most on medical limits, evacuation and exclusions for activities such as quad biking or high-altitude trekking.
  • Rental cars in Morocco usually come with an excess, the amount the driver owes after damage unless a waiver or another policy covers it.

Do I need travel insurance for Morocco?

Legally, no. Practically, it comes down to three questions:

  1. Does your health plan pay for care abroad? The next section explains what to ask.
  2. Could you pay a large medical bill on the spot? Facilities in Morocco can require payment before treatment or discharge (see below).
  3. How much of your trip is prepaid and nonrefundable? That total is what cancellation cover protects.

If the answers are "no", "no" and "a lot", your gaps are wide. If your plan covers emergencies abroad and most bookings are refundable, the main gap is evacuation.

How US health insurance and Medicare work abroad

Private and employer plans. Cover abroad varies by plan: some pay emergency care, often by reimbursement after you have paid, and others pay nothing (CDC Yellow Book). Ask your insurer, ideally in writing: is emergency care in Morocco covered, does the plan pay the clinic or reimburse you, and is evacuation included?

Medicare. According to medicare.gov, Medicare usually doesn't cover health care outside the US, apart from rare exceptions such as some cruise ship care near a US port. Medigap plans C, D, F, G, M and N pay 80% of foreign travel emergency care after a $250 yearly deductible, up to a $50,000 lifetime limit, for emergencies that begin in the first 60 days of a trip (Medicare.gov, Sep 2026). Medicare Advantage plans set their own rules, and some don't cover foreign emergencies, so ask your plan directly (AARP, Sep 2026).

Evacuation is the expensive part. Most health plans do not pay for a medical evacuation, which the CDC and the State Department put at $20,000 to more than $250,000 depending on location; both recommend evacuation insurance.

What healthcare is like in Morocco

UK government travel advice describes public health facilities in Morocco as limited and private clinics as operating to a higher standard; the CDC adds that trauma care centers are uncommon outside urban areas. For a visitor, that points to private clinics in large cities such as Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech and Fes, hours by road from a desert camp or an Atlas trek. Morocco's public health insurance (AMO) covers people who qualify through Moroccan employment or residency, plus their dependents (CNSS, Sep 2026); a short-term tourist doesn't meet that criteria, so budget to pay directly for your own care.

Paying for treatment. UK and French government advice both warn that facilities can require payment up front or before discharge, so keep a credit card with room on it. An insurer's assistance line can sometimes pay the clinic directly; otherwise, keep every receipt and claim later.

Pharmacies. Pharmacies are easy to find, and pharmacists often advise on minor problems. After hours, a night-duty pharmacy (pharmacie de garde) stays open in each city and district, a rotation required by Moroccan pharmacy law (gov.uk; Law 17-04). As the CDC advises, carry prescription medicine in its original packaging with a copy of the prescription.

What to look for in a policy

General criteria, not a ranking of insurers: the policy wording decides what gets paid.

Cover Why it matters in Morocco Check in the wording
Emergency medical Clinics may ask for payment up front The limit; primary or secondary cover
Medical evacuation and repatriation Desert camps and mountain villages are far from city clinics A separate limit, and who approves an evacuation
Trip cancellation Riads and desert tours are often prepaid The covered reasons
Trip interruption and delay Many US trips connect through Europe or Casablanca The minimum delay before cover starts
Activities Quad bikes, sandboarding and Atlas treks are common add-ons Excluded activities, altitude limit
Rental car damage Rentals come with an excess you owe after damage Whether Morocco is included, and the maximum
Baggage Connections raise the odds of a delayed bag Per-item limits, receipts required
Pre-existing conditions Excluded unless the policy says otherwise Look-back period, waiver conditions
24/7 assistance Someone who knows local clinics Whether it can pay a clinic directly

Primary cover pays first; secondary cover pays only what your US plan does not, which can slow a claim.

Desert tours, treks and activities

Many policies exclude or limit motorized activities such as quad bikes and buggies, and set a trekking altitude limit that varies by plan (Allianz, World Nomads, Sep 2026). Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak, reaches 4,167 meters (13,671 feet), above some of those limits. Check each activity you plan, not just the country.

Choosing a tour is covered in Sahara Desert Tour from Marrakech: 2, 3 or 4 Days?; how it fits a first trip, in 7 Days in Morocco.

Ask in writing. If an activity is not clearly listed, email the insurer a one-line description, such as a guided quad bike ride near Merzouga, and keep the reply.

Car hire excess insurance in Morocco

Rentals in Morocco include basic third-party liability insurance, but you still owe an excess (the British term for a deductible) if the car is damaged, unless you add a waiver (Hertz Morocco terms, Sep 2026). Three ways to reduce that risk:

  • The rental desk's extra cover lowers or removes the excess: the simplest option, so compare its daily price.
  • A standalone excess policy, bought before the trip, reimburses the excess after you pay the rental company.
  • Your US credit card's rental coverage can apply abroad, but some cards exclude certain countries or vehicles (The Points Guy, Sep 2026). Check the benefits guide before declining the desk's cover.

How much is travel insurance to Morocco?

There is no fixed price: the premium depends on your age, trip cost, trip length and chosen limits. According to Squaremouth and InsureMyTrip (2026), comprehensive plans (medical, evacuation, cancellation and more) are commonly quoted at about 4% to 10% of prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs, while travel medical plans skip cancellation, are priced on age, trip length and medical limits, and generally cost less. Compare medical and evacuation limits before the price: two quotes a few dollars apart can pay very different amounts.

If you need medical care in Morocco

  1. In an emergency, call an ambulance or get to the nearest private clinic, then tell your insurer.
  2. For anything non-urgent, call the insurer's 24/7 line first: many policies require pre-authorization before an evacuation (AXA, World Nomads, Sep 2026).
  3. Keep every document: invoices, pharmacy receipts and the medical report, which may be in French.
  4. In a serious situation, contact the U.S. Consulate General in Casablanca or the State Department's 24/7 line: see the box above.
  5. File the claim promptly: policies set a deadline.
