Two roadside stops appear on nearly every Essaouira tour, and they are not equal.
The argan oil cooperative is genuine: women crack and press the nuts by hand, and you can buy from the producer. It costs 20 to 30 minutes, and nobody has to buy anything.
The goats in the argan trees are more complicated. The animals do climb for the fruit, but National Geographic reported in June 2022 that farmers began placing goats in trees in the early 2000s to earn tips from tourists: goats coaxed onto wooden platforms or carried up by hand, kids tied to the trunk for photos, three to four hours in the branches at a stretch. A veterinarian quoted in the piece warned of heat stress and dehydration in summer, and an ecologist said the animals damage leaves and seedlings on trees that need 7 to 15 years to mature. World Animal Protection called it animal cruelty; the farmer interviewed said there was no other work.

- The medina (about 1.5 hours). The town UNESCO listed in 2001 was laid out in the mid-18th century by Sultan Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdallah on European fortification plans — straight streets and gates, a grid unlike Marrakech's. Woodwork, jewelry and rugs fill the lanes around Place Moulay Hassan.
- Skala de la Ville (30 minutes). The sea-facing rampart walk, with old cannons pointing out at the Atlantic.
- The fishing port and Skala du Port (1 hour). One of Morocco's main fishing harbors: blue boats, sardine crates, gulls, and grills selling the morning's catch.
